‘I have no choice’: Woman tells of ‘life-altering’ abortion after cancer diagnosis

The former mother of a child with a rare genetic condition, who had a miscarriage while on a family vacation in Hawaii, told Al Jazeera she is facing a life-alting abortion after the diagnosis.
“I had no choice but to have the abortion.
I can’t say that I regret it,” Marisa Galdon, now 47, told the news website Al Jazeera.”
It’s the worst thing that could happen.
You’re not allowed to abort, you’re not able to get an abortion, and it’s the most traumatic thing that can happen.”
Galdon told Aljazeera that she had an extremely rare type of tumour that affected the brain, spine and lungs.
“The tumor was so small that the doctors could not see it,” she said.
“They could not tell me that it had spread and they could not find any blood, so they said it was a brain tumour.”
When they said brain tumours, I was completely overwhelmed by the fact that I had to make that decision.
“Gondon, who has been married for 33 years, says her husband has never talked about his cancer, but she said he has never had a discussion about it with his doctor.”
He has never asked me about it.
It’s been hard because I’ve been so afraid of what might happen,” Galdont said.”[He said] I have a good heart.
I have faith in God and the doctors.
“Gonçalves, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, told The New York Times that she has “no regrets” for having an abortion.”
If I had known I was going to have an abortion it would have been much more difficult, but I am so grateful to God for the miracle that he is providing for me,” she told the newspaper.”
In this situation, where it is just too late, I have no other choice but abortion.
“Gostan is not the first Brazilian woman to have a foetus aborted after a diagnosis of cancer.
A similar case in December 2016 led to a petition for a change in Brazil’s abortion law to ban abortions after 20 weeks gestation.
