In his 100th birthday, John Lewis has celebrated his 100 years of running with a “happy surprise” that will have fans across the country thinking of all the things they have missed.
The British retail giant was founded in 1868 and is one of the world’s largest brands with a combined market value of £2.8 trillion.
Its flagship brand, John Wayne, is one for life and is known for its rich heritage of products and iconic brand identity.
The company has enjoyed a huge popularity with young people and young families and is currently being revived by the “Boys & Girls Club” programme.
Its website lists the company as the best-selling child’s book publisher in the UK and its annual sales figures for the period to December 2016 stood at more than £3.4 billion.
Its new chairman, John Clark, said the “big announcement” was “a really important moment for our brand and our brand’s customers”.
“We’re delighted to announce John Lewis 100th anniversary this year, and to celebrate with a happy surprise, we are introducing a new range of John Lewis shoes that are designed to be enjoyed by young people,” he said.
“The shoes feature the iconic John Lewis logo on the heel, and have a unique ‘happy surprise’ that will be an unforgettable moment for all those who are going to celebrate the anniversary with us.”
John Lewis also launched a new brand-wide “John Lewis’ 10-year plan” to be delivered in 2018.
“As we have said before, we have 100 years to go and we will continue to build our brand into the world of children’s books, the best in children’s technology and toys, and the finest children’s clothing, while also continuing to serve our customers and businesses,” Clark said.
“Our team is in the final stages of this journey, and we have the support of our colleagues in the John Lewis Group.”
The announcement follows the launch of a new £1bn John Lewis Children’s Book Club.
The new range will feature a range of the company’s iconic shoes, shoes from its flagship John Lewis store and footwear and accessories from a range created by the brand’s UK partner, Aldi.
The company also announced plans to bring its famous John Lewis book, John Lee’s Secrets, to the UK by the end of 2020.
“This new range has been designed for children, and for parents, with everything they need to know about John Lewis’s legacy, and what is on offer to them,” Clark added.
“With a range designed for the latest technology, this range is also the perfect addition to the range of books, toys and apparel the company offers to children across its UK stores.”
