Donald Trump is facing a backlash over his remarks about Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s heritage and his attacks on the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a new poll.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday showed 61 percent of Americans oppose the Republican presidential nominee for President and a record high 41 percent support him.
Trump’s comments were made in response to Curiel, a Mexican-American judge, and he did not specifically mention Curiel by name.
A number of Democrats and civil rights activists have called on the Republican Party to withdraw its support for Trump.
Trump is currently leading Democratic rival Hillary Clinton by a margin of 50 percent to 38 percent.
The survey found that 52 percent of those surveyed believed the GOP nominee’s comments about Curiel “reflect poorly on the party and the nation.”
Another 38 percent of respondents said they thought Trump had “misrepresented the opinions of the voters in his speech.”
The poll also found that 57 percent of Democrats believe Trump’s response to the judge’s heritage was “insensitive” and 35 percent said it was “unfair” to the Latino community.
The president’s comments came just days after he attacked Curiel during a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Feb. 9.
“When you see Judge Curiel presiding over the Trump University case, what a sham, what an embarrassment, what the hell is going on?
They want to give you a free pass for a sham business?”
“This judge, this judge is a hater of the U-Haul, of Trump University.
He’s a hattrick of the people of this country.
This judge is not a hick.
And he’s a very ungrateful hick, as far as I’m concerned.
I’ll tell you what, you know, he is.
Curiel is a former federal judge and the longest-serving Hispanic judge in the nation. “
He’s going to get a lot less of it, I’ll be honest with you, because he’s going get a fair shake.”

A Trump spokeswoman said that Trump’s remarks about Curiels heritage “reflect badly on the Democratic Party and the country.”
“Judge Curiel has no legal standing to sit on the Supreme Court,” the spokesperson told Al Jazeera.
“Judge Sessions, the Republican nominee, is also unfit to be on the highest court in the land.
The voters are tired of hearing that the Republican establishment is too afraid to stand up for the American people.”
Trump, who is expected to formally announce his presidential candidacy in the coming days, has been critical of the judge for the last several months.
“You know what Judge Curios heritage?
I’ve got the most beautiful heritage,” Trump said during a campaign event in February.
“If I had to pick one thing that would be more important, it would be my heritage.
He doesn’t have a very good judicial temperament, you understand that. “
I’ve seen a judge.
He doesn’t have a very good judicial temperament, you understand that.
And what I do is, I tell the truth, I’ve been saying for a long time, I want the judges to take the cases and put them in their own court.
They’ll say whatever they want.
But I’m gonna take the case.
They can do their own thing.”
